I really wanted to get Grizzly Medicine Lake, the waterfall, snowpack and all the lush green into one picture, but it was just too much so I took lots of pictures of this little area. This is just another point of view back at the different levels on the walls above the lake.
Notice the waterfall from the snowpack going into Grizzly Medicine Lake. Just an awesome place.
Another look at the the entire Grizzly Medicine Lake and the greenery surrounding it.
Parts of the trail leading down from the pass were pretty tight and had a really long drop down to the lake.
Looking down the valley where the stream from Grizzly Medicine Lake flows. We will be taking a right and heading up that valley.
A little example of some of the extreme weather here. This tree died a long time ago and the sun has bleached the wood. Thought it was a neat clash with the rest of the foreground and background.
Ok, another close up look at the waterfall going into Grizzly Medicine Lake.
A look at our destination for today. To the left of the peak is where is the pass. What I didn't know was that we were going to have to continue up to the little notch closest to the peak on the right side.
At this Tom had burnt out his battery in his camera, but this was such an awesome place with the pass overhead and the clear lake behind us.
This lake was going to be the last place for water until we hit camp. We were going to be above the tree line for the next 4 hours. This lake was fantastic with snow surrounding its far side. Notice how blue the sky was. An awesome day for backpacking.
Couldn't get enought of this fantastic place. The climb did not look too bad from this location and I was excited to get up high and check out the view.
Snowpack above the tree line. Little did we know, but there was another lake behind all those tree holding the water from this snowpack.
Yea, Yea, I took a lot of pictures of this lake!
As I was climbing up to the pass, I turned around and got this picture looking down the valley we climbed that day. The lake to the right is the one that we took so many pictures of. The lake to the left is the one that was behind the tree line from the other lake. Look at the blue in that lake. Just awesome!
A little higher up towards the pass, another look down the valley and at the two lakes we climbed by.
Finally on top of the pass. It looks like the trail just falls off the end of the pass. It was an awesome day to be up here and the wildfire smoke was not too bad today.
Throughout the day we will hike around these peaks and stay on top of the ridgeline. The low point in the middle of this picture is where we will take some pictures looking back at this pass.
So we made it to the pass, but we weren't done climbing. We will take the high trail for our destination. The lower trail goes off to another pass. It does not look very steep from this point of view, but it was, trust me.
The customary "I conquered the pass" picture.
As we were climbing up the steep section from the pass, this is a look back down at the pass.
The trail straight in front leads over the pass that you can see, on the top left you can see some other backpackers heading up the same trail we will be taking.
In an attempt to show how steep this section of trail was Tom took a picture of me uphill.
This is a look down a valley from the other side of the peak that we had not seen. From this point to the end of the trip was the best part of the trip. We remained high on the ridgelines above tree level for hours. The wind was really blowing and we had to put jackets on for some of the sections.
I thought this whole landscape was just awesome. You have the snow on the peaks, the greenery along the slopes and then you have the rock line in the mountain in the foreground.
Looking down from the highpoint down to the rocky pass. Way in the background is Two Medicine Lake. We will walk around that lake today. We will end up doing about 15 miles on this day.
After we rounded the high point and started working our way around the peak, the wind was howling and we were in the shade. Not only did we have jackets on, but we had to pull out our gloves. In an attempt to show you how precarious the trail was here, I had Tom stop and turn around so that I could give you some perspective of what we were hiking through. If you are afraid of heights, this would not have been a fun trail.
After we rounded the peak, we came to this rock outcrop that, once you climbed to the end, gave you absolutely beautiful pictures. Tom captured me working my way out. As you can see I had to take my hat off or it would have blown away.
This is a picture of the rock outcrop that I climbed out on to get some really awesome pictures.
Probably one of my favorite pictures from this trip. Just too bad the smoke was in the area. This was taken from the rock outcrop in the last two pictures. You can see where the glacier carved the valley and now it is just a lush green valley with snowpacks everywhere. If you follow the ridge to the left on this picture, that is where we will be turning down to the next valley.
Here is Tom hanging out on the rock outcrop. During this day there were lots of places to just stop and take in the gorgeous views. This one being one of the best.
